Honey Buttermilk Bread

My mouth is watering so much that I actually suspect that it might be crying.

Crying because it doesn’t have this bread in it right this very second.

I have made quite a few different bread recipes, and I’m not going to lie to you, this is probably one of my favorites I’ve made yet.

It is SO soft. Like piling your lunch meat on a pillow and then going to town.

Or, my personal favorite way of consuming carbs… with a pound of butter slathered over the top after pulling it straight out of the hot oven.

See: Exhibit A

Is there anything more homey than freshly baked bread?

It’s like walking into your Grandma’s house for a visit.

Pretty sure I just compared my house to a Grandma’s house.

It’s okay. Sometimes I feel like an old soul.

Also, I’ve got a head start on this bread baking game. I’m going to be the BEST grandma ever.

OR, at least I’ll make the best bread.

My non-existent grand babies are so dang lucky.

One of my new favorite bread recipes. It's soft, fluffy and sweet. A real treat!

Ingredients

  1. 1 tablespoon active dry yeast

  2. 1 teaspoon sugar

  3. 1/4 cup warm water (between 95°F - 105°F)

  4. 2 cups buttermilk

  5. 1/3 cup honey

  6. 1 teaspoon salt

  7. 3/4 teaspoon baking soda

  8. 1/4 cup salted butter, melted

  9. 6 cups white bread flour

Instructions

  1. Into the bowl of an electric mixer with the dough hook attached, add the yeast, sugar and water. Mix to combine and let rest until the yeast has activated and is nice and foamy. This should take about 5 minutes.

  2. Add the buttermilk, honey, salt and baking soda to the bowl. Add three cups of flour and mix on low speed until a smooth dough forms. This should take about 5 minutes. Now add the melted butter to the mixture and mix until the butter is completely incorporated. Add the remaining flour slowly, one cup at a time while mixing on low speed. When the dough pulls away from the sides and bottom of the bowl you have added enough flour. Continue to knead on low speed until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  3. Transfer to a greased bowl and turn to grease the top. Cover, and place in a warm and draft free area to rise for 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in size.

  4. Punch down and form into two loaves. Place in greased loaf pans and grease top. Cover again, and allow to rise for another 45 minutes.

  5. Preheat oven to 400° F and bake for 30 minutes in preheated oven. Remove loaves from oven and brush with melted butter. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning out to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  1. * If you want to see some pictures of what the dough looks like throughout the process, please jump on over to The Restless Chipotle's page and check out her pictures. She's kind of a bread baking genius.
