Better Than Swig Sugar Cookies

I’ve done it. I’ve made Swig sugar cookies better than Swig.

I adore these cookies.

I’m kind of sad that I don’t have one in my mouth right this second, actually.

I have never been a huge fan of sugar cookies because if I wanted to lick a giant bowl of straight sugar then I would just lick a giant bowl of straight sugar instead of eat a sugar cookie.

These actually have FLAVOR. The frosting on top is a perfect accompaniment to the not so sweet cookie.

These are seriously a dream come true.

You know what isn’t a dream come true?

“Mommy and Me” swimming lessons. Those things are seriously my worst nightmare.

Just imagine this: First day. The instructor points out that this course is designed to get little ones comfortable around water.

I could have told you right then and there that we were already beyond that point. I should have just walked to the front, gotten my refund and come back to play later.

But NOOO… Apparently I love to torture myself.

Baby Girl is not only completely comfortable around water, she has absolutely no fear of it. Personally, I think a healthy dose of fear is good for children when it comes to water. As soon as Baby Girl even so much as catches a whiff of a nearby swimming pool, containing her is like trying to catch a greased pig.

The swimming instructor proceeds to line the entire group up along the side of the pool. Every other child is wrapping themselves around the legs of their parents, clinging to them for dear life while Baby Girl is fighting to free herself from my grasp.

The instructor starts by saying, “Okay, the very first and most important part of swimming is to ask your Mommy and Daddy if it’s okay to go into the water. The second and equally most important rule is to make sure Mommy or Daddy is already in the water before you go in.”

Just as she finishes this sentence, Baby Girl breaks free from her prison and without even so much as a slight hesitation dives straight into the water.

I dive in, heave her out of the water and stand there in drenched embarrassment while the class looks on. The awkward silence broken by squeals and giggles from Baby Girl.

Better Than Swig Sugar Cookies

A soft and delicious sugar cookie topped with a sweet and tangy sour cream frosting - one of my favorite cookies!

For the cookies

  1. 1 cup butter, softened

  2. 3/4 cup vegetable oil

  3. 1 cup sugar

  4. 3/4 cup powdered sugar

  5. 2 tablespoons vanilla extract

  6. 2 eggs

  7. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  8. 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

  9. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  10. 5 1/2 cups flour

  11. 1/2 cup sugar

For the Sour Cream Frosting

  1. 1/2 cup butter, softened

  2. 3/4 cup sour cream

  3. 4 cups powdered sugar

  4. 1 teaspoon salt

  5. milk, if needed

  6. 3 drops red food color


  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F.

  2. Cream together the butter, oil, sugars, vanilla and eggs. Beat on medium/high speed until light and fluffy about 5 minutes. Add baking soda, cream of tartar, salt and flour and beat just until incorporated.

  3. Using a 1 or 2 tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop out the dough and roll into balls. Place on a prepared cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.

  4. To a shallow bowl or small plate, add 1/2 cup sugar. Spray the bottom of a glass cup with a little bit of non-stick spray. Dip into the small bowl to coat it in sugar, and smash the balls of cookie dough until they are about 1/2 inch thick. Repeat until all the dough has been flattened.

  5. Bake for 8 minutes. If the bottoms of the cookies have started to brown they are over-baked. Let cookies cool on the cookie sheet for 1-2 minutes before moving to a cooling rack to cool completely.

  6. Make the frosting while the cookies are baking. Start by creaming together the butter, sour cream and salt. Then add powdered sugar and beat until smooth. Add milk if you need to liquify it a little bit more or more powdered sugar if its too liquified. Color with red food coloring a few drops at a time, completely mixing after each addition.

  7. Frost cooled cookies with sour cream frosting. Serve immediately or keep in the fridge in an airtight container for up to one week.
